LTMCP is vigilantly monitoring our coastal conservation properties for signs of impact from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. We manage several brackish water and fresh water marshes in the coastal counties that, if impacted by oil, could result in long-lasting damage to these essential ecosystems. Those include:
- Tate Property
- Sweet Bay Hollow
- Henderson Point
- Wessler Property
- Cedar Lake Island
- Browne Property
- Dismuke Road
- Sunset Avenue
- Mavar Property
- Butera Property
- Twelve Oaks
- CCC Camp
- Bennett Bayou
If the salt marsh grasses are covered with oil, they may suffocate and take years to recover. LTMCP is in constant communication with our partners at the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor the current conditions and prevention options.
Update: As ofJune 23, 2010 MDEQ has confirmed that a ribbon of emulsified oil and tar was found in Dog Keys Pass, the area between Ship Island and Horn Island. It’s about 300 yards wide and seven miles long and is expected to enter the Mississippi Sound. The Coast Guard, BP and their vessels of opportunity are actively attempting to skim the area in an effort to prevent the oil from reaching our shoreline.
