Red Creek

Red Creek is a coastal blackwater stream that forms near Lumberton in Lamar County and ends at the Black Creek, near the Pascagoula River in Jackson County. Red Creek is part of the East Gulf Coast Plain eco-region with a drainage area of over 400 square miles. Red Creek gets its name from the reddish stain that naturally-occurring tannins impart to the water.

The links to the right are designed to inspire more learning about the Red Creek watershed. Lesson Plans & Activities provide over 80 lessons with corresponding test modules targeted to compliment elementary curricula. The Virtual Field Trip link allows the student to tag along with Ms. O’Neal, an environmental educator, who will demonstrate watershed stewardship through a series of mini-videos produced in the Red Creek watershed. A listing of local, state and federal extended learning opportunities are listed as Enrichment Activities, whereas, a listing of student stewardship opportunities are listed as Student Outreach. Tools for Study provides many Red Creek-specific watershed facts, maps, photos, videos, vocabulary and stewardship checklists. Environmental Careers links students to a vast array of career possibilities in the science, management, wildlife or conservation arena.
